Composition in Two Composition
Rationale
For this project, I made a magazine cover based on the social issue of police brutality with a twist, the relationship between police brutality and language. This issue may not be as known as the physical aspects of police brutality, however, there are a few instances and different concepts of this social dilemma. For instance, some aspects of language where police brutality can be intertwined are police tone, police language, body language, and the police stance on this concern. The two genres I will be using is a script and magazine cover. In today’s society, the issue of police brutality is quite popular. Many people may choose to stay quiet but others will fight against what they believe is wrong.
For the first genre, I created a magazine cover that conveyed the idea of police brutality in relation to language. For this magazine cover, I used the main topics from my inquiry-based essay to give a brief idea of what is happening in society in concern to the different aspects of language. For my first topic, which was police language and tone, I used some adjectives to give a brief description of the topic. As for the body language section, I used a photograph depicting an event of this social issue. Finally the section of police stance on this subject, I used a quote in order to provide evidence of this problem. The basis for the different summaries is to not make the magazine cover full of verbiage. The reason for this is to attract the audience. A wordy magazine cover will be less likely to be read than a magazine cover with pictures and a few words. Finally the background of the magazine cover. I specifically chose this background because it shows the race, gender, and age group of the people who are usually the victims of police brutality. On the cover of the magazine, there is also a sentence, somewhat like a slogan. In my opinion, that sentence will get the audience’s attention. This magazine cover is to spread awareness of these problems and encourage citizens to help prevent or improve this situation.
For the second genre, I have created a script that focused on a slightly different audience from the magazine cover. The targetted audience for this script is the people in society who are not aware of this social issue of police brutality. In my script, there are five characters who all have their specific lines when interacting with each other. These characters include two police officers, Alex, the main character, and his two neighbors, Mr. Walker and Mrs. Shem. In this script, the main topics of the inquiry-based essay can be found but unlike the direct indication on the magazine cover, as the audience reads the script, it can be found in the details. In this script, the main character’s name is Alex Brown, and the person who is an exemplar of the targetted audience is Mr. Walker, Alex’s neighbor. In this scenario, there was a gunshot in an apartment building when a passerby heard and called the police. When they got to the apartment building, they accused Alex of being the criminal. They kept wanting to take him with them until Mr. Walker came and talk some sense into the two policemen. The two officers had different personalities, which was made to show that there are two kinds of policemen in society, good and bad. The use of swear words is associated with negative emotions. That officer that used the swear words was very angry when things did not go his way and he did not make an arrest based on his opinion or his racist ways of thinking. This reveals the use of pathos in this genre.
Reflection
Transitioning from my research essay into this project was not hard for me in the sense that I have all this information, I just have to use it together and create a composition in two genres. After my research essay, I have gathered an enormous amount of information on my topic, then I researched several genres to choose two according to my audiences. I have two different audiences. Whenever someone is talking about police brutality, the usual audiences are the justice system or people who have already experienced it, however, I chose to have a different audience because many people have never seen police brutality or even experienced it. The process of preparing this composition in the two genres was different than composing the research essay. For the research essay, I had to do research and incorporate the information from the seven different sources into one essay. As for this project, I just used my essay to get the information for the two genres. For the first genre, I used the same audience as my research essay but for the second one, I changed the audience. Each genre affects the audience in their way. For example, the magazine cover will be more sophisticated than a play (script). So, the audience for the magazine cover is the higher authorities in the justice system, while the audience for the script will be the public more specifically, people who have never experienced or encountered police brutality with language. I found myself using pathos and logic in my two genres.
While completing this project, I had to do very deep thinking when creating the composition in two genres. My first idea was creating a magazine cover while using photography to express the ideas of my topic. After some research on this particular genre, I decided to change it into a political cartoon instead of a photograph. Yet, with a political cartoon on the cover of the magazine, it was not really expressing the essence of this genre. After getting some feedback, I started a composition in another genre. I wrote a script that incorporated my thoughts on police brutality and language. So my two genres are a magazine cover and a script.
As for the magazine cover, my initial idea, it came about with the influence of my inquiry-based essay. I used the information gathered from my essay and fuse it into the magazine cover. This is my first time creating a magazine cover, so I was not sure about what information to put on the cover. In my essay, I used subtopics to create sections in my essay. For the magazine cover, I used those subtopics on the magazine cover with a very brief summary of that specific sub-topic. As for the magazine cover, there is proof and it is reality logic. Since the magazine cover is for the higher authorities in the justice system, for them to make some changes and help improve society, they will need proof to make an accusation.
While writing the script, I realized how helpful feedback was. With feedback on my first genre, I slightly changed the audience for my second genre. Although making both genres with the same audience is quite simple, in order to spread awareness to wider society, it is better to target different audiences to make these problems known to the public. For genre two, the audience is people in the world who are not aware of police brutality and language discrimination to other people in society. In the script, the characters experienced different emotions, and also when reading the script, the audience will probably have an emotional response.
